Calculating Multiple Width Hardwood Flooring

We often get requests for multiple width wood floors here in our Chicago location. A multiple width hardwood floor is a floor of varied widths, all installed together in a pattern. This would be a row of one width, then a row of another width, etc…

The most common is a 3″/4″/5″ combination, followed closely by a 3″/5″/7″, but the possibilities are endless.

This type of wood floor installation is pretty unique, and is a great looking floor.

Here is the formula if you are doing equal linear feet of your multiple width floor. That is, one strip of each width. It is a two step process.

Multiple Width Flooring Formula

  1. Total Square Footage / Total Pattern Width = # of Patterns
  2. # of Patterns * Each Width of Flooring

Here are a few examples:

  • Example #1: 1400 Square Feet of 5″, 6″, 7″ Wide Hardwood Flooring (3 Widths)
  • 1400 / 18 (5+6+7) = 78 Patterns
    • 78 * 5 = 390 of 5″
    • 78 * 6 = 468 of 6″
    • 78 * 7 = 546 of 7″
  • Total: 1404 Square Feet
  • Example #2: 1200 Square Feet of 3″, 5″, 7″ Wide Hardwood Flooring (3 Widths)
  • 1200 / 15 (3+5+7) = 80 Patterns
    • 80 * 3 = 240 of 3″
    • 80 * 5 = 400 of 5″
    • 80 * 7 = 560 of 7″
  • Total: 1200 Square Feet
  • Example #3: 800 Square Feet of 2-1/4″, 3-1/4″ Wide Hardwood Flooring (2 Widths)
  • 800 / 5.5 (2.25+3.25) = 146 Patterns
    • 146 * 2.25 = 328.5 of 2 1/4″
    • 146 * 3.25 = 474.5 of 3 1/4″
  • Total: 803 Square Feet
  • Example #4: 600 Square Feet of 2-1/4″, 3-1/4″, 4″, 5″ Wide Hardwood Flooring (4 Widths)
  • 600 / 14.5 (2.25+3.25+4+5) = 42 Patterns
    • 42 * 2.25 = 94.5 of 2 1/4″
    • 42 * 3.25 = 136.5 of 3 1/4″
    • 42 * 4 = 168 of 4″
    • 42 * 5 = 210 of 5″
  • Total: 609 Square Feet

From here, there are some important things to figure out, and remember. You are going to round up to the nearest bundle size for each width, and with most mills, each width flooring has a different bundle size. I also err a little higher than normal for my waste. Because you have multiple widths, you are not always going to be able to use your cutoffs in the next row.
